Miss Universal Universe
2018
Performance, video, installation
2.5 x 2.5 x 2.5m
Miss Universal Universe is an installation and performance. The name of this work is taken from the novel Dogeaters by Jessica Hagedorn. Miss Universal Universe is an auto-ethnographic portrait of Garcia’s cultural identity, exploring concepts of ancestry, feminism and capitalism. The installation borrows (dated) Filipino symbols of home, akin to the interior aesthetics of her childhood, which pay reverence to the memories of the Philippines that her parents have held onto as immigrants in Australia. Her performance samples the Miss Universe pageant, Aerobics OzStyle, and karaoke, performed with her Father. This work is dedicated to her late mother, Imelda.
