Heaven Knows
2025
Plexiglass, bamboo, palm leaves, concrete blocks, metal, 3D-printed PLA, monitor, single-channel video (12:00 mins looped), audio (9:34 mins looped), red stoneware, raffia, wire
Dimensions variable
Supported by the A.I.R. Gallery Fellowship program; with assistance from the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principle arts investment and advisory body.

Borrowing from neuroscience and mourning rituals from Indigenous Philippine folk religions, Heaven Knows considers how grief compels the brain to enter a state of motivation through a yearning for the lost connection. Garcia applies this research to her own personal narrative to create a neural remapping of her grief, one which travels through the realm of instinct to find meaning in new and metaphysical realities. Clay artifacts and a holographic installation draw on both ancient and digital technologies to participate in a nonlinear continuum that carries the living past forever forward.

Heaven Knows expands upon Garcia’s research and practice in martial arts to consider technologies of warfare that guard against paranormal rather than physical threats. A student of Inosanto LaCoste Kali, she cites the system’s final, twelfth category, a study of immaterial weapons—mental, emotional, and spiritual training tools that provide esoteric methods of protection. In so doing, she acknowledges the existence of a parallel spirit world and the permeability of the earthly and metaphysical planes, posing a unique series of protocols to engage with the upper echelon.

3D models AI-generated from prompts using verbatim transcript
from pyschic readings to communicate with my late mother

The central artwork in the exhibition is a pyramid-shaped installation fabricated from bamboo, raffia, and steel iron, natural materials native to the Philippines. It references funerary rites widespread throughout the Archipelago, particularly the custom of guarding the departed from malevolent spirits by interring them with talismans, weapons, and agricultural tools. These ancient cultural rituals combine with the aesthetics of contemporary technology: a synthesized soundscape composed by Sonia Manalili surrounds the installation, while a 3D-rendered video is displayed within the pyramid’s transparent panes. Integrating digital imagery sourced from mediumship readings, the hologram attempts to commune with and guard Garcia’s mother in the spiritual realm, but also intends to conjure a speculative record of her in the afterlife. In lieu of remembrance through material records and past memories, Garcia builds a metaphysical archive to coalesce future and after-death experiences. Through this psychic collaboration, magic and religion mingle to annihilate space and time, reinforcing an omnipresence of the ancestral.

Acknowledging the symbiotic ways in which the living and the dead might protect each other, Garcia also offers a series of ceramic pieces that cite Lab-labón (or Adug): small incised clay houses where spirits are believed to dwell. Traditional to the Indigenous Tingguian, these houses are typically stored among rice jars in the belief that residing spirits multiply the rice. Offerings are deposited inside as a gesture to ask for the protection of crops and to ensure a good harvest. Garcia’s renditions are incised in an improvisational manner, using custom 3D-printed stamps modeled from designs on earthenware sherds dating back to the Iron Age ca. 500 - 200 B.C.

A Supersonic Requiem
2024

Digital video, color, sound
5:01 mins
In collaboration with Mei Saraswati (Sound Design); Keith Lafuente (Costume Design); Albert Torrillo (Drone Pilot)
Commissioned by Apexart for Goddess Tales, curated by Katie Yook

A Supersonic Requiem engages with the existence of a parallel spirit world and the interconnectivity of the preternatural and physical planes. On her apartment rooftop, Garcia wields her handmade bullwhip - a flexible weapon in Filipino Martial Arts - also known to be the first human made weapon to break the sound barrier and produce a sonic boom.In this video, Garcia carries out an adaptation of a pre-colonial Philippine funerary and mourning ritual that provides a level of psychic protection from unsettled and feared spirits, whilst also serving as a choreographic requiem dedicated to her late mother. The wielding of the whip purpose is a defensive and protective strategy from preternatural beings as a protocol to secure tranquility for those departed.

Fair Warning to the Gods
(Bullwhip, Horsewhip, Stockwhip)
2024

Paracord, sting-ray barbs, kevlar thread, paracord innards, steel rod, bamboo, rattan, manila rope, yarn, wire, wax
Dimensions variableCommissioned by Apexart for Goddess Tales, curated by Katie Yook

Fair Warning to the Gods is an extension of the weapon series Tropical Dissent (2018-ongoing) and was created in tandem with the video work, A Supersonic Requiem (2024). This series of whips engages with the existence of a parallel spirit world and the interconnectivity of the preternatural and physical planes. The incorporation of stingray barbs in each design directly references the Buntot Pagi - a stingray tail used as a flexible, whipping weapon in Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). It is known to be wielded traditionally in spiritual rituals to protect against the wrath of feared ancestors, deities, and preternatural beings, as the venom from the poisonous barbs was believed to be effective to cause excruciating wounds, even for mythical creatures.Fair Warning to the Gods considers these sting-ray barbed whips as a kind of ‘paranormal warfare technology’ that provide protection from evil and may aid as a defensive strategy to appease unsettled spirits. They reference three different types of whips, each employed in FMA for specific reasons of combat.

Force Field
2023-24Augmented reality app and site-specific drawing in liquid chalk
Dimension variable

In collaboration with Justina Yeung (AR App Developer); Shengnan Dong (3D Modeling); A La Una (Audio); The Chrysalis Kali Collective (Orasyon Text)

This project presents an orasyon - a special prayer, incantation or mantra that is mentally or verbally recited before combat as a protective armor. It is a mode of psychic self-defense that is unique to Filipino Martial Arts and Philippine oral traditions. It asks for the unison of mind, body, and spirit and is believed to provide magical powers and invulnerability that enables the user to perform incredible and unbelievable feats, such as withstand bullets and weapon attacks, as well as heal injuries. The efficacy of the orasyon requires belief and intention behind the recitation that gives individual words their significance and psychosomatic power.

First presented at The Shed’s Open Call in 2021 as part of Garcia’s piece The Headless Headhunt (2021), the Augmented Reality (AR) app functioned as a digital frontier, designed specifically for the installation. This second iteration, however, serves as a standalone piece, intended for one to access their inner warrior. In this version the Orasyon encircles the viewer from head to toe, slowing spinning around their body, enacting a force field. Its purpose is to be activated by the user when necessary in any location as a spiritual shielding, virtual barrier of defense, and a safety affirmation.
The AR app is activated by a hand-drawn image on the window of the gallery, which adopts the talismanic tradition of anting-anting. This practice involves codifying the verbal orasyon in image form. Often, an anting-anting is tattooed on the body for a permanent layer of protection. The piece also incorporates a hand drawn QR code, which, when scanned on the viewer’s personal device, directs them to a link to download the app in order to activate the AR artwork.

Online documentation of The Chrysalis Kali Members who participated in the second of two collaborative Orasyon writing workshops in 2021.

This Orasyon was originally co-authored by the Chrysalis Kali Collective in 2021 and includes contributions by founder Kristen Cabildo, Katrina Cabanban, Princess Manuel, Noelle de la Paz, Nicole Reyes, Ezza Valdez, and exhibiting artist, Caroline Garcia.
This collective of Filipina/x women and gender expansive femmes have gathered since 2018 to train in Filipino Martial Arts under the mentoring of Cabildo, specifically with a focus on decolonization through practice and embodiment. They predominantly train in Kali (also known as Arnis or Eskrima) which emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, and bladed weapons, as well as “open hand” techniques without weapons. For this project, Garcia facilitated writing workshops to collaboratively create this text to address the collective’s needs in the culture of today’s socio-political landscape.
The app includes a soundscape composed by A La Una, featuring the voices of individuals in the collective, reading lines from the full Orasyon text. The app also features an animation of butterflies that depict the nymphalis antiopa (also known as the Mourning Cloak), which in its immature form, is covered in red-tipped spiny bristles for protection.

Tropical Dissent (Weapon Series)
2022 - ongoing
3D printed polylactic filament
Dimensions Variable

Tropical Dissent is an ongoing series of 3D-printed simulated weapons that exist in the slippery realm between fantasy and reality. These objects are inspired by armaments from the Philippine Islands traditionally used in warfare, agriculture, and ritual, as well as improvised weapons composed from everyday objects and defense mechanisms in our natural environment. As a series, these weapon renderings engage in a speculative narrative of retaliation - one where non-hegemonic people might actually have the right to resist.

Tropical Dissent (sketches), 2022 - ongoing, pencil on canvas paper, 11 x 14 inches
This series cites a practice of DIY weaponry from Guerrilleras (women resistance fighters), such as paltiks - homemade firearms fashioned from scrap metal and iron, gas pipes, gunpowder and nails, improvised by resistance fighters from whatever they could scavenge.

This body of work was created during Garcia’s Session Program at Recess, I Woke Up & Chose Violence (2022). They began as a series of sketches, which Garcia then fabricated into 3D printed objects. This project was informed by one-on-one/small group workshops that she has facilitated, where participants design their own personalized, handheld weapon based on a somatic exercise.

Dancing on Axes & Spears
2023Mixed media
Dimensions Variable
Presented at Montclair State University Galleries; supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its funding and advisory body.

Dancing on Axes & Spears is a solo museum exhibition that featured new commissions, as well as a survey old works that Garcia has created since 2018 to explore community resilience and personal identity.
In this exhibition, Garcia’s traverses experiences of assimilation and cultural memory, including her relationship with Indigeneity through diasporic and feminist perspectives. The main component of the gallery features an interactive martial arts gym - an expanded iteration of I Woke Up & Chose Violence (2022). Employing video, performance, sculpture, and installation, Garcia addresses a central theme of “alterity” – an anthropological term meaning “otherness” to mark her position in the diaspora where distance, language barriers, and colonization fracture traditional knowledge. The works are emblematic of the ways Garcia resists assimilation tactics within colonized land through unique survival strategies informed by elements of Indigenous Filipino culture and traditions including martial arts and spirituality, technology, and community collaborations to builds upon these themes and their relationships to larger systems including immigration, self-hood, and safety. The exhibition title was borrowed from an epic chant (gasumbi) from the Indigenous Kalinga tribe of Northern Luzon, which tells the story of Emla, a healing heroine and fearless warrior of the Buaya, Crocodile People who is challenged to undertake a headhunting raid. (“Dancing on the edges of axes and tips of spears” as translated in Verbal Arts in Philippine Indigenous Communities by Herminia Meñez Coben)

The Breath of Death
2022Performance Installation [3D scanner & software, blowgun (origin: Philippines), darts, MacBook, monitor, microphone, PA system & speakers]Dimensions variable
The Breath of Death is an activation of the installation Destroy the Image (2022). This performance acts as a living archive of forgotten choreographies, referencing Indigenous Filipino weaponry, centering the use of a sumpit - a Filipino blowgun. Drawing from diasporic ontologies, Garcia addresses the inherent losses that occur in the translocation of cultural practices over geographies and generations. Through the re-rendering of gestures from analog (body) to digital (live 3D scanning), ruptures and glitches become modes of grief. With compassion, Garcia explores what it is to insist on embracing these losses instead of concealing them.
This work was developed over a short-term residency at das weisse haus in their rotunda exhibition space.
In addition, Garcia created a video work titled, Dissumulations, using the imagery from the multiple 3D scans, which were captured over the development period and during the live performance. The audio samples from a scene from the cult classic martial arts film, Enter The Dragon.

Destroy The Image
2022
Mylar sheets, blowdarts, floor vinyl
Dimensions variable
Presented at das weisse haus for Vienna Art Week; as part of “and so on...” curated by Kathy Cho

Destroy The Image invites viewers to both physically insert themselves into and interact with the artist's personal struggle with the paradoxical paradigms of grief - vulnerability/protection, poison/cure, distortion/clarity, and refusal/acceptance. This multimedia installation includes customized virtual reality headsets, DIY take-home templates, a reflective mirror installation, video, and performance - see The Breath of Death (2022).
Each component reflects Garcia’s ongoing process of mourning matriarchal loss. Following a six-year trajectory of adopting Indigenous headhunting practices from the Philippine Islands, this work is additionally influenced martial arts and its representation in pop culture. Garcia references a quote from the cult classic martial arts film, Enter The Dragon, present in the vinyl flooring, as a metaphor to describe the complexities of her grief:“The enemy has only images and illusions behind which he hides his true motives. Destroy the image and you will break the enemy.”- Shaolin Abbott (Enter The Dragon, 1973)
